Richard Roundtree was born on the 9th July 1942, in New Rochelle, New York State, USA. He is an actor and former model, perhaps still best known for his memorable role as John Shaft in the film “Shaft” (1971). He has appeared in numerous movies during the 70s and 80s such as “Escape To Athena” (1979), “Game For Vultures” (1979), and “City Heat” (1984). Roundtree regained his popularity with a role in movie “Se7en” (1995), and in a remake of “Shaft” (2000), where he portrayed Samuel L. Jackson’s uncle. His career began in 1970.

After he finished college, Roundtree went back to New York where he gained a role in the Negro Ensemble Company. One of his best stage roles was as Jack Johnson, the heavyweight boxing champ in “The Great White Hope”.
The international fame Roundtree received after his remarkable appearance in “Shaft”, in which he played a private detective and supercop hero. Roundtree later starred in two sequels and a remake as well. Although he received only $12,500 for the role in “Shaft”, Roundtree remains famous and recognizable by that role. In his personal life, Richard Roundtree was married to Mary Jane Grant(1963-1973), andthey have two children. Karen M. Ciernia was his second spouse; they married in 1980, but they’re currently separated. Roundtree has two daughters and a son from his second marriages. A big fighter for cancer awareness, Roundtree suffered from a rare case of male breast cancer back in 1993. He underwent a successful double mastectomy and chemotherapy. His side interests are football, photography, and golf.
