Sara Blakely began her career as a regular employee at Walt Disney World in Florida, as well as a stand-up comedian. She also worked in Danka’s supply department before being promoted to national sales trainer. She got the idea to start her own hosiery brand after experimenting with her pantyhose and getting the desired results. Sara Blakely then used her savings to develop the concept and went on to pitch it to various mills. She received several rejections before finding a mill operator in North Carolina who accepted her idea. Sara was successful in patenting her concept and trademarking her brand name as Spanx. After her products were sold at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and Bloomingdales, she established a successful supply chain.
She finally quit her job and worked full time on her business in 2000, after her business grew and became popular. In 2005, she competed in the reality show The Rebel Billionaire, finishing second, and was later invited to serve as a judge on the American Investor show. Her company began to thrive, with sales in the millions of dollars, and by 2012, she was on the cover of Forbes magazine as the youngest billionaire. In 2013, she was ranked 93rd on the list of the Times 100 most influential people. Recently, after her company was valued at $1.2 billion, she surprised each of her employees with two plane tickets to their dream destinations as well as $10,000 in perks to commemorate the occasion.
